Title of the study: Invasion from Mars: A Study in the Psychology of Panic by Hadley Cantril (1940).

Dr Hadley Cantril was an American public opinion analyst and academic, who spent major part of his professional life at Princeton University, New Jersey, as a prominent psychologist and researcher. Born in Utah in 1906, he is most remembered for developing the Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale in 1965, also known as ‘Cantril’s Ladder’ published in ‘The pattern of Human Concerns’. Cantril’s Ladder is a measurement instrument that asks people to rate their present, past, and anticipated future satisfaction with life on a scale anchored by their own identified values.

His legacy is defined by three major pillars that shaped modern social science and global metrics:

• The Global Standard for Measuring Happiness- the Cantril Ladder: His 0-to-10 self-anchoring scale remains the premier tool for global well-being research.
